An interview with Kim O'Mahony, Co-founder at UNLEASH Technology Solutions
Managing a service-based business can become extremely time-consuming and complex using manual processes. UNLEASH is a software platform that allows service providers to unleash their potential by simplifying the back-end processes required to manage their business, while passing on a tangible benefit to the customer. Without an integrated management platform, service providers continue to rely on multiple tools and manual processes, making it nearly impossible to scale.
Tell us a little bit about UNLEASH and how it came to be.
Prior to starting UNLEASH, I was working on my other business, Dawg Tired, a walking, boarding and coaching business for dogs. We currently use several tools to run our business including Excel, MailChimp, Slack and iCal. As the invoicing, scheduling and communication portion of our business began to grow exponentially, we realized that there was a very specific, unmet need in our industry.
Dawg Tired, has been in business for 13+ years and, 4.5 years ago, we began working with Carol Burch, former President of SAP Canada. Through working with her dogs, Ruby and Coco, we got to know each other and I found out about her background in software. Fast forward to fall 2016, I was finally at my wits end and realized I needed a product and I needed it now. That’s when Carol came on board as a Co-founder and UNLEASH Technology Solutions was born.
We see UNLEASH as a solution to a few different industries but we are tackling the pet industry first with a service called PetPerfect, which will utilize the UNLEASH platform.
What problem are you trying to solve?
Without an integrated management platform, the amount of time it takes to run a business continues to rise and it’s not sustainable. For Dawg Tired, we discovered systems that support kennels and doggie daycares, but there was nothing out there to support dog walkers. This is the most difficult scheduling hurdle. Once you have that, all other services are easy to implement.
What makes this type of platform different is that it needs to manage a many-to-many relationship, which is why we couldn’t reverse engineer any of the tools readily available. In this case, it’s many staff to many dogs. We realized that we something that would allow our customers to use one simplified platform for all interaction and would provide us with the bandwidth to manage our business smoothly, and in a way that is scalable.
Please explain how you solve that problem.
By integrating all aspects of the business, UNLEASH will allow business owners save valuable time spent managing their business, allowing them to focus on other aspects of their company. It will allow us to schedule our dogs with employees, review the number of dogs assigned to each walker, and even help us run payroll. Otherwise, these processes are manual.
Not only will the app serve the business owner, but it will provide a more seamless and positive customer service experience for the end user, or in this case, the dog owner. When a dog owner needs to know where their dog is, when they were booked for an appointment or walk, or how much money is left in their account, they can access all of this information and more by using UNLEASH.
UNLEASH is a SaaS, Cloud-based platform that has both web and iOS/Android interfaces. We also plan to implement artificial intelligence using a chatbot called “SpotBot” which will provide another layer of communication to the customer, allowing them to directly ask questions like “Where is my dog?” to the app.
Our solution becomes increasingly beneficial as a company experiences growth. For example, if you are managing 25 dogs at your dog walking services, you will save 15 hours/month on back-end work. If you are managing 500 dogs, you will save upwards of 200 hours or upwards of $5,000 a month.
How has your experience been at The Accelerator?
SUPER fantastic. We have had amazing mentors and manage to maintain consistent communication with them, even if it isn’t always face-to-face. They are passionate, willing to give advice and are truly invested in helping us.
The support we receive is phenomenal. The Slack channels allow us to talk with other founders and build that community that we otherwise wouldn’t have known how to create. That has been invaluable.
The program has given us the support and resources we need to really plan what the business will look like by helping us forecast where we are now, and where we will be in 5 years. We have been so focused on developing our product and we can’t wait to share our progress.
What is next for UNLEASH?
We are so excited to announce that we will first to market with this software platform and we will be doing a soft launch of our product at the Calgary Pet Expo on April 22 and 23!
